The prestigious World Green City Award 2022 was recently bestowed upon Hyderabad.
Important information
Hyderabad has won the World Green City Award 2022, beating out cities such as Paris, Bogota, Mexico City, Montreal, and Fortaleza in all six categories.
The award was presented to Hyderabad at the 2022 International Association of Horticulture Producers (AIPH).
The winners in six categories and the overall winner were announced at the IUCN Leaders Forum in Jeju, South Korea, during a special gala dinner.
Living Green for Biodiversity, Living Green for Climate Change, Living Green for Health and Wellbeing, Living Green for Water, Living Green for Social Cohesion, and Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth are the six award categories.
During the AIPH event, Hyderabad was awarded "Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth."
The category "Living Green for Economic Recovery and Inclusive Growth" focuses on developing systems and solutions that enable all city residents to overcome economic hardship and grow.
In this category, Hyderabad was nominated for the greening of the Outer Ring Road.
The city was named a global leader in nature-inspired approaches to urban design, form, and function.
Concerning the Outer Ring Road
The Hyderabad Outer Ring Road (ORR) is known as the "Green Necklace to the State of Telangana." The Jawaharlal Nehru Outer Ring Road is the official name. This 158-kilometer-long, eight-lane ring road expressway circles Hyderabad. It can reach speeds of up to 100 km per hour. It improves connectivity between various national highways and state highways from Hyderabad to Vijayawada and Warangal. The project was carried out by the Andhra Pradesh state government through a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) called Hyderabad Growth Corridor Limited (HGCL). The project's goals are to reduce pollution in the city, reduce congestion, and provide faster access to key parts of Hyderabad and various urban nodes outside the city by connecting national highways.
