Why has the number of female IIT students increased
November 24, 2022
Data reveal that the system of supernumerary seats for women, which was implemented five years ago, has resulted in a continuous increase in the number of females on the campuses of famous IITs. As admissions for the academic year 2022-23 ended, 3310 girls, or 20% of the total number of seats, have confirmed admissions throughout the 23 Indian Institutes of Technology, with 16635 seats allotted across all six rounds of Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).
With 3213 girls confirming their admissions last year, when the seat allotment stood at 16296, the IITs achieved the aim of 20% of girls in fresh admissions for the first time. The trend persisted for the second year in a row, highlighting the importance of this booster shot in encouraging more girls to attend IITs.
Only 995 girl candidates, or 9% of all seats, confirmed admission at IITs in 2017, a year before the launch of the female supernumerary seat plan, up from 847, or 8% of all seats, in 2016.
