UGC orders institutes to register students at ABC portal

The University Grants Commission (UGC) will soon require all higher education institutes (HEIs) offering online and distance learning (ODL) programmes to register their students at the Academic Bank of Credit (ABC) portal — abc.gov.in.
What exactly is the ABC portal?
The ABC portal is a national-level facility that promotes curriculum flexibility and interdisciplinary/multidisciplinary academic mobility of students across the country's higher educational institutions (HEls) through an appropriate "credit transfer" mechanism.
What is the purpose of the ABC portal?
The major functions of ABC are registration of HEIs under the ABC scheme, opening, closing, and validating student academic accounts, credit verification, credit accumulation, student credit transfer/redemption, and promotion of the ABC among stakeholders.
