About IIT Kharagpur
IIT Kharagpur is the first Indian Institute of Technology established in India. Formally inaugurated on 18th August 1951, IIT Kharagpur was, in its infancy, housed in the historic Hijli Detention Camp, Kharagpur. The institute has consistently been in the top 10 technology institutes of the country for years and continues to break ground in research and technology through the multidisciplinary courses it offers. Spread over a huge area of 2100 acres, biggest among all the IITs, IIT Kharagpur is a mini self-sufficient ecosystem in itself.
IIT Kharagpur or IITKGP as it is also referred to, offers 119+ Undergraduate, Post Graduate, Doctoral, Research and Dual Degree programmes through its 19 departments, 9 Centres of Excellence, 13 Schools and 25 Research and Development Units. Programmes offered are from Engineering, Management, Physical Sciences and Law domain. Students can also pursue Inter-Institutional programmes at IIT Kharagpur in collaboration with other National and International universities and colleges. The illustrious list of collaborative institutes of IIT Kharagpur includes IIM Calcutta, University of Melbourne and Curtin University of Technology amongst others.
A total of 650 full time faculty members are available for more than 11,000 students who are currently pursuing their degrees at IIT Kharagpur. All faculty members reside on campus. Multidisciplinary and cross-disciplinary research is the highlight of IIT Kharagpur’s research focus. Admissions
IIT Kharagpur Admission Procedure:
The admission process, entrance exams and selection process for each level of courses at IIT Kharagpur is different. For all B.Tech, B.Arch and integrated B.Tech-M.Tech programs, the admissions take place through the IIT JEE (Advanced) entrance examination. This is the qualifying exam. After the qualifying exams, candidates have to register on the Joint Seat Allocation Authority portal and select their preferred IIT and specialisation. On the basis of the scores in IIT JEE (Advanced) and the preferences selected, candidates are offered an admission at IIT Kharagpur. In the case of B.Arch, candidates need to clear the AAT (Architecture Aptitude Test) in addition to JEE Advanced.
For securing an admission in the M.Tech programme and M.tech/Ph.D dual degree programme candidates have to qualify the GATE exam. There is a counselling process held for GATE qualified candidates post which admission is offered. Admissions may be based solely on GATE score or may be based on personal interaction and GATE score.
Admissions to the MCP-Ph.D programme are secured through merit achieved in the Joint Mtech/MCP-Ph.D entrance exam. Admissions to the unique Masters in medical technology Course at IIT Kharagpur are secured by applying on the IIT KGP website and qualifying a written test conducted by IIT KGP. The admissions for LLM are through online application on IIT Kharagpur website and then qualifying institute written test. MBA and Masters in Human Resource management can be availed through the CAT exam. Candidates need to apply and register online for Ph.D admissions. They are given on the overall performance of a candidate on a written test, academic performance and personal interview. All admissions are confirmed only after payment of requisite fees and verification of documents.

Full remission of the Tuition Fee for General and OBC students whose family income is less than ₹1 lakh per annum.
